Autistic 12 Year Old Boy Describes His Condition #AutismAwareness #Autism

Hi, I’m Oscar and I’m autistic. Here’s a video that I made to help describe how my autism makes me who I am. Topics covered include sensory issues, food, noise, crowded places, routine and more. I am classed as “high functioning” or, a few years ago, I would have been diagnosed with “Asperger’s Syndrome” which is part of the autism spectrum.
I hope you find it useful but please do remember that every person with autism is different – they may do some things the same as me but they may also do things differently. It’s all about Autism Awareness.
For more information about autism see the website of the National Autistic Society (http://www.autism.org.uk/about.aspx)

NOTE: There were some topics that Oscar found too distressing to talk about in the video such as low self-esteem, dwelling on the past, thoughts of self-harm, bullying and hitting out. These are some of the downsides to autism and something that we, as a family, work on with Oscar in order to support him. He also has a number of things in place at school such as one-to-one sessions and support in social and emotional skills.

This is so insightful! I learned a lot from watching this and I know that many others will too. Well done Oscar for posting such a useful video and for sharing with us at #TweensTeensBeyond
